From Pharmacy to Flavors: How a Mother’s Fear Became a Promise of Hope

From Pharmacy to Flavors: How a Mother’s Fear Became a Promise of Hope

CHLOE LOO

For more than 15 years, my life was defined by the four walls of a pharmacy — caring for patients, understanding health, and believing deeply in prevention and wellness. I even had the honour of leading my team at Caring Pharmacy to win “Outlet of the Year”.

But long before Chloe’s Gelato existed, my journey into food began at home — as a mother trying to protect her children.

My First Lesson in Dairy-Free Living (2008)

In 2008, when my first son was born, we discovered he had allergies to dairy. Back then, plant-based alternatives weren’t common. I had to learn everything from scratch, experimenting with rice milk and reading every label with a pharmacist’s precision.

Without realising it, I was building the foundation for what would come years later.

When Motherhood Tested My Strength

When my third son was born, he developed severe eczema and multiple food allergies. At that time, I was breastfeeding him and constantly worried that something I ate might worsen his condition.

There were days I was afraid to eat, yet I knew I had to nourish myself to care for him. That fear pushed me to study ingredients more deeply and become even more mindful of everything I prepared.

A Small Coincidence & A Bestie’s Help

I have always loved experimenting in the kitchen, so my husband surprised me with a KitchenAid mixer.

One year, while visiting my best friends in Singapore, I chanced upon the ice cream machine attachment on offer.

I didn’t even know what I would do with it, but I felt: I must buy this.

The attachment was bulky and heavy, but my dear friend Cynthia offered to help bring it back to Malaysia for me. Sometimes, life plants seeds quietly through small acts of kindness.

The "Gym Freak" and the Lethal Gelato

Around this time, I was also a bit of a “gym freak”. I loved staying active and was always cautious about sugar intake. As a pharmacist, I understood how sugar affects long-term health. As a mother, I wanted better options for my kids.

I became obsessed with developing “No Sugar Added” desserts.

I still remember the very first batch I made at home. I churned it happily and waited 12 hours for it to set. When I finally tried to scoop it… it was hard as a rock.

I joked that I could probably knock someone out if I threw it at someone!

That was my first lesson: creating healthy, sugar-reduced gelato that is still creamy is a science, not just a recipe.

From My Kitchen to Your Table

I didn’t give up.

I kept refining, failing, and improving.

My goal was simple: to create treats my children could enjoy safely — without dairy, eggs, or unnecessary sugar.

What started as home experiments grew into something more. Friends encouraged me to sell, and customers began to trust me. Step by step, Chloe’s Gelato was born — guided by purpose rather than pressure.

More Than Just Gelato

Today, Chloe’s Gelato is my promise.

It is a mother’s promise to protect.
A pharmacist’s commitment to safety.
A message to families with allergies: You are not alone.

This business did not start in a boardroom.

It started in my kitchen — with fear, hope, friendship, and determination.

And that is what continues to drive me every day.
